How to Stay Happy and Productive in January

It's very true, January is the most depressing month of the year; the days are colder, shorter and darker leaving Christmas as a distant memory. You may like me get the "winter blues" feeling more tired, less motivated or active as usual. These are my tips of getting over the most difficult month of the year, let's get through this together!

Spend time outside.
It is definitely easier to stay active during the warmer months, when it's nice to spend time outdoors. However, maintaining physical activity is just as important in January. Getting outside, even for a little while may change your perspective and remind you that spring isn't too far away. Exercise is also great for releasing endorphins that make you happier, even just a walk may raise your spirits.

Set goals.
Whether short term or long term, making goals to work towards is one of the best things to do for finding motivation. It may be the thing that gives you a sense of accomplishment and make you that little bit more productive. Start with a small list of achievable goals you'd like to complete by the end of the day, or the week; then as your motivation grows try looking a bit further ahead. Make sure you write them down, as they are way more likely to be accomplished than easily forgettable ideas in your head.

Plan Something Fun/Treat Yourself
Maybe you want that chocolate bar; to treat yourself to a meal out. Or even to binge watch Netflix once you've completed your to-do list. Whatever you choose to reward yourself with is up to you, but it's definitely important to focus on the positives and have a reward system for your hard work. It will both boost your motivation and give you something to look forward to.

Don't deprive yourself
January is already the most depressing month of the year, so why make it worse by depriving yourself of the things that make you happy? Personally I love carbs and ... so why would I want to change that when I'd rather be under a duvet watching Netflix, with a hot chocolate feeling really content? It's a good idea to indulge yourself sometimes during the month, not quite as much as during December but enough that you strip yourself of things that comfort you. Above anything, make sure you don't deprive yourself as it tends to limit happiness and leave you overcome with guilt and negative feelings.
