Gingerbread


Today my sister and I were feeling particularly festive, so we decided to make a Gingerbread house together! I thought I'd include the recipe for the Gingerbread itself as it tasted so good! 

All you would need to do to create the house is: find a template online and cut the dough shapes, create icing to stick it together and decorate as you please. But if wanted you could just roll the dough out and create Gingerbread men or shapes of your choice with the Gingerbread.

Ingredients
  • 250g unsalted butter
  • 200g light muscovado sugar
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup
  • 2 tbsp treacle
  • 625g plain flour
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tsp mixed spice
Recipe
Firstly preheat your oven to 200°c/Gas Mark 6. Then in a pan, melt your butter, golden syrup, treacle and  light muscovado sugar over a low heat continually stirring until the sugar has dissolved; leave to cool slightly. 

In a bowl, preferably large, mix the plain flour, mixed spice, ginger and bicarbonate of soda until mixed in. Add your melted butter mix into the bowl and stir until a dough mixture is formed that is stiff enough to roll out. If your mixture is too soft, add in some more flour.

Next take the dough out of your bowl its ball and knead it for a couple of minutes. Then roll out and create whichever shapes you fancy. Add them to a baking tray and bake on the middle shelf of your oven for 8-9 minutes or until firm. Leave to cool on a wire rack until completely cold; then you are ready to decorate them exactly how you would like, or create your Gingerbread house if desired.
